Depending on the abortion method used, there are different potential health risks for the mother:
- Heavy bleeding, in severe cases haemorrhage
- Sepsis, if the abortion was incomplete
- Injury of the cervix, potentially leading to miscarriage at a future pregnancy
- Injury of the uterus, potentially leading to miscarriage at a future pregnancy
- Rupture of the uterus, leading to internal haemorrhage
There have been different studies conducted researching a correlation between abortion and the risk of breast cancer. The relative risk of breast cancer in women after one abortion is already slightly higher than with women who have never had an abortion, the risk rising with every further abortion.*
