IVF treatment

IVF and the pro-life-view

The deep-seated personal wish to become a parent – to have a child from their own flesh and blood – is very understandable. But if we look at this question more closely, we cannot support IVF from a pro-life perspective. Why?

Because IVF treats human beings as products that can be created under artificial circumstances, stored and discarded. Effectiveness and cost efficiency are the primary concerns of providers.

The further the number of embryos who can be created in one cycle is restricted while requirements to implant all of them are in place, the further the death toll of IVF can be reduced. Different countries have different regulations, but even in the safest scenario for women and children where only one embryo would be created and implanted, the process itself would still treat the child as a product rather than an individual human being.

Looking at this only through the lens of biology, some would consider this best-case-scenario to be pro-life. But to be truly called pro-life, it would need to be in accordance with every aspect of human dignity. In the end, there is no right to have a child, so producing one in a lab can never coincide with these aspects.
